Plaster and waterproofing layers alone are inflexible. Temperature changes, building movement, substrate cracking: all of these appear on the surface—as cracks, detached plaster, or leaks—if there is no embedded reinforcing mesh in the layer.

Fiberglass mesh is a mandatory component of thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS). The mesh must be embedded in the adhesive and plaster layers so that the system can withstand stresses caused by temperature fluctuations without cracking. It is doubled around corner profiles and window and door edges—these are the most critical stress points. The mesh’s weight determines which system it is suitable for: lightweight mesh for thin plaster systems, heavier mesh under thick decorative plaster.

Reinforcing mesh can be used under both interior and exterior plasters—especially where the substrate is uneven: at junctions of different materials, repair zones, or where the plaster layer is thicker and the risk of movement is higher. With embedded mesh, the plaster accommodates small substrate movements without surface damage.

A separating and crack-isolation membrane is necessary where the substrate and covering move differently: ceramic tiling over wooden substrates, weakly bonded concrete substrates, or structural elements prone to movement. Different expansion coefficients cause tiles to detach over time—the membrane absorbs this stress instead of the bonding layer.

Waterproofing mesh is the reinforcing layer of the brush-applied membrane at critical junctions: corners, around pipe penetrations, edges of bathtubs and shower trays—where the waterproofing system is under constant stress and the membrane alone is insufficient. The junction is the system’s weakest point—water first penetrates there if the mesh is missing.
