Waterproofing is most vulnerable at edges, corners, and transition zones. It is not the flat surface where the membrane fails, but where the geometry is complex, where movement concentrates, and where the thickness of the applied layer is uneven. Without reinforcement mesh, the liquid-applied membrane can crack at these points, even if the entire layer is otherwise applied perfectly.

What is the purpose of the waterproofing mesh?

The waterproofing mesh is a mandatory reinforcing element in liquid-applied waterproofing systems. Embedded between the two layers, it mechanically holds the membrane in place during movement and cracking, preventing the spread of microcracks. Where the mesh is embedded, the membrane will not open even if movement occurs in the substrate.

Where is the use of waterproofing mesh mandatory?

  • In wet rooms: at the junction of the base plate and wall, corners next to showers and bathtubs, every internal corner and edge — these points are continuously stressed by movement and temperature fluctuations;
  • On balconies and terraces: around drains, at the balcony slab-wall connection, and on the edge of the railing sill slab;
  • In every transition zone where the substrate material changes (concrete-drywall, substrate-wall boundary);
  • In underground garages and roof terraces near movement joints.

Waterproofing executed without mesh does not meet elevated quality standards and warranty conditions are not fulfilled.

What system requirements apply to the mesh?

The mesh is embedded after applying the first layer, while it is still fresh — tack-dry, not fully dried. The mesh size overlaps edges and corners by at least 10 cm in both directions. The second layer can only be applied after the mesh is fully embedded and the first layer has dried.

Omitting or incorrectly placing the mesh results in moisture penetration through the substrate, which evaporates from under the covering and causes tiles or stone cladding to detach. Repair then requires removing the entire covering and rebuilding the waterproofing.

What type of mesh should be used?
