Waterproofing is most vulnerable at edges, corners, and transition zones. It is not the flat surface where the membrane fails, but where the geometry is complex, where movement concentrates, and where the thickness of the applied layer is uneven. Without reinforcement mesh, the liquid-applied membrane can crack at these points, even if the entire layer is otherwise applied perfectly.
The waterproofing mesh is a mandatory reinforcing element in liquid-applied waterproofing systems. Embedded between the two layers, it mechanically holds the membrane in place during movement and cracking, preventing the spread of microcracks. Where the mesh is embedded, the membrane will not open even if movement occurs in the substrate.
Waterproofing executed without mesh does not meet elevated quality standards and warranty conditions are not fulfilled.
The mesh is embedded after applying the first layer, while it is still fresh — tack-dry, not fully dried. The mesh size overlaps edges and corners by at least 10 cm in both directions. The second layer can only be applied after the mesh is fully embedded and the first layer has dried.
Omitting or incorrectly placing the mesh results in moisture penetration through the substrate, which evaporates from under the covering and causes tiles or stone cladding to detach. Repair then requires removing the entire covering and rebuilding the waterproofing.
Browse our waterproofing meshes or request advice to select the mesh suitable for your waterproofing system.
The Kerakoll Color Collection is an integrated project that includes innovative materials - resin, cement, handcrafted wood, microcoatings, paints, and glazes - coordinated on a single color palette.
