The facade is the most heavily exposed surface of a building: UV, precipitation, freeze-thaw cycles, wind, and biological effects all at once. Plaster and stone facades gradually deteriorate due to these conditions — impregnation and protective treatments can slow this process and extend the facade's lifespan.

What is facade protection?

Facade protection is not painting — paint forms a surface layer that eventually peels off. Facade impregnation and water-repellent treatment penetrate into the plaster, brick, or stone material, making the surface water-repellent without visibly changing its appearance. Moisture is not absorbed, algae and mold do not settle, and freeze-thaw cycles cause less damage.

What types of facade protection materials are available?

Silan and siloxane-based impregnations deeply penetrate the pore network of plaster, brick, and stone, forming a water-repellent layer — water absorption is drastically reduced while vapor permeability remains. Water-repellent creams and gels are more concentrated silan/siloxane-based products that provide deeper penetration, especially effective on dusty and cracked plasters. Biological coating inhibitors are biocidal substances that prevent and inhibit the growth of algae, moss, fungi, and lichens.

When is facade protection treatment needed?

For new facades, the new plaster should be treated after sufficient drying and curing but before the first appearance of biological growth — prevention is significantly more effective than treatment. After renovation, if the facade plaster has been repaired or replaced, treating the new surface extends its lifespan. In biologically active locations — shaded, humid facades and buildings near water — repeated treatment every one or two years is necessary.
