Gaps appearing in old parquet flooring are not just an aesthetic issue: dust, dirt, and moisture can get into the gaps, leading to the wood's degradation over time. Filling the gaps before renovation is a mandatory step—not only for appearance but also to ensure the even curing and durability of the surface treatment layer.

What is parquet gap filler?

Parquet gap filler is a flexible or semi-flexible, wood-based filling material designed to repair gaps, cracks, and minor damages between parquet boards. It is sandable, matches the wood texture, and should be applied before lacquering, oiling, or resin coating. The result is a smooth, uniform wood surface on which the coating cures evenly.

When is gap filler necessary?

Using gap filler is recommended:

  • Before renovating old parquet where movement and drying have left gaps between the boards;
  • To repair individual minor mechanical damages (dents, cracks);
  • After sanding, if sanding has revealed small depressions or gaps;
  • During floor renovation when the goal is a completely smooth, uniform surface before the final coating.

Which gap filler to use and when?

Flexible type: where movement between boards is expected—unconditioned rooms, solid wood parquet where humidity changes cause board movement. Flexible filler does not crack due to movement.

Gap filler made from sanding dust: mixing wood dust from the first sanding with the intended lacquer or oil creates a supplementary filler that perfectly matches the parquet’s color and texture. Experienced parquet renovators use this method for the best aesthetic result.

Pre-formulated type: manufacturer gap fillers are available in several base colors that can be matched to the most common wood species shades.

Compatibility with coating

The gap filler must be compatible with the final coating. Oil-based filler for oil systems, water-based filler for water-based parquet lacquer and resin coating systems. Following the manufacturer’s recommendations prevents adhesion and curing problems.
