Parquet primer is the first and often the most important step in the wood floor surface treatment system. Skipping it is the most common cause of uneven appearance, poor adhesion, and early wear of parquet lacquer, oil, or resin coatings.

What is the role of parquet primer?

The parquet primer serves three functions:

Absorption control: Wood absorption is uneven — knots, denser growth rings, and looser parts absorb the coating differently. Without primer, lacquer or oil dries with varying thickness and gloss in these areas — resulting in a blotchy, uneven surface.

Adhesion improvement: The primer creates an intermediate bonding layer between the wood and the coating, providing stronger mechanical adhesion than applying without primer.

Wood stabilization: Some primers also harden the wood surface, preventing the raising of wood fibers, which can occur on sanded wood after applying the first coat.

When is parquet primer mandatory?

Parquet primer is mandatory:

  • In resin coating systems, where the primer is a prerequisite for chemical bonding between the wood and reactive resin — without primer, the resin does not adhere properly;
  • On new, sanded parquet before lacquering, where the wood is highly absorbent and unevenly so;
  • On renovated parquet before oiling, where remnants of the old coating cause uneven absorption.

Parquet primer for resin coating systems

Under resin coatings — for example, liquid resin-based floor coatings — the primer’s role differs from lacquer systems. Resin primer not only controls absorption but also creates a chemical bonding interface between the wood and resin layer. Compatibility is crucial: the primer and resin coating must come from the same manufacturer system; otherwise, bonding is not guaranteed.

Drying time and the next layer

The primer’s drying time must be observed: the next layer — lacquer, oil, resin — can only be applied after the specified drying time has elapsed. Applying too early disrupts the primer and leads to uneven bonding.
