Fiber reinforcement addresses the three most common weaknesses of concrete, screed, and repair mortar simultaneously: shrinkage cracking, lack of impact resistance, and vulnerability during the early strength development phase. By mixing in fibers, these properties can be improved without significantly changing the mixing ratio or workability.
Fiber reinforcement involves adding short, randomly distributed fibers to the cement-based material mix. Unlike traditional rebar, the fibers do not carry load but hold the binder matrix together at a microscopic level, preventing the spread of microcracks and early splitting.
The most widely used type of fiber reinforcement. Due to its low melting point, it is not suitable for fire-resistant concrete, but in general concrete, screed, and repair mortar, it offers the following benefits:
Has higher tensile strength and modulus of elasticity than PP fiber. Used in industrial floors, crack-resistant screeds, and special load-bearing concrete structures. Steel fiber not only protects concrete against cracking but also improves post-crack load-bearing capacity (post-crack ductility).
The fiber amount is dosed in kg/m³. Too few fibers do not provide significant reinforcement, while too many impair workability and surface smoothness. Manufacturer recommendations are always product- and application-specific.
