Cleaning tools is the final and most often neglected step of the work process. Hardened cement on the spatula, cured epoxy on the mixing head, set grout on the rubber float — each damages the tool and also affects the surface smoothness in the next work phase. Tool cleaning is not a waste of time: it extends the tool’s lifespan.

When and with what should tools be cleaned?

For cement-based materials (adhesive, grout, repair mortar): Fresh material must be removed before setting with water or a mildly acidic tool cleaner. For hardened cement, an acidic tool cleaner is required to chemically dissolve the cement.

For epoxy-based materials: During the epoxy’s working time — before it sets — it can be removed with a solvent-based tool cleaner. Hardened epoxy requires mechanical removal or a strong solvent — cleaning is best done before the pot life expires.

For adhesives (parquet adhesive, flexible flooring adhesive): A solvent-based cleaner is needed, but the recommended solvent varies depending on the material type. Two-component PU adhesive requires a different solvent than MS polymer.

For grouts: Fresh grout can be removed with water. Hardened grout — especially epoxy grout — should be treated with acidic or special grout cleaner.

Water-based and solvent-based tool cleaners

Immediate cleaning of tools is always significantly easier than removing hardened material later.
