The covering moves. Thermal expansion, shrinkage, structural movement, and foundation settlement all cause displacement that the covering system must accommodate. Where the covering cannot move freely — where two covering sections meet, or where the covering connects to a wall — an expansion joint is necessary. The expansion profile manages this joint: it seals, protects, and aesthetically organizes it.

What is an expansion profile?

An expansion profile is a mechanical sealing element that closes the movement gap in the covering with a fixed, flexible, or sliding structure, while allowing movement in the direction of the covering. It does not rigidly seal the gap — it flexibly adapts to movement.

When is an expansion profile mandatory?

  • On floor coverings, an expansion joint is required every 40–50 m² or every 8 meters, which must be sealed with an expansion profile;
  • Where two coverings of different materials meet (e.g., ceramic and parquet, ceramic and concrete);
  • Where the covering meets a wall — to seal the so-called perimeter joint;
  • At building expansion joints where structural movement passes through the covering;
  • On outdoor coverings where freeze-thaw cycles and thermal expansion increase the amplitude of movement.

Expansion profile materials and designs - Color and aesthetics

Expansion profiles are available in various widths and surface finishes. Some systems also offer complementary profile cover colors that closely match the shade of the covering.
