The waterproofing and tiling system is only sealed if its joints are sealed as well. The tape and profile do the job where the membrane and the covering end — and where movement is greatest.
In bathrooms and showers, the sealing tape works at the junction of horizontal and vertical surfaces — at bathtub edges, shower tray edge tapes, and floor-wall joints. The waterproofing tape embeds into the membrane and flexibly follows movement without cracking the waterproof layer. Corner tape for waterproofing is also available as a prefabricated element — hand-formed solutions at internal and external corners carry risks, while the prefabricated corner provides a predictable result. Waterproofing built without sealing tape is incomplete — the joint is the system’s weakest point, and water first penetrates there.
At the movement limits of the covering and floor system, the expansion profile absorbs the stress generated by temperature changes and building movement — otherwise, the covering cracks, not the profile. Floor expansion profiles are mandatory where the covering runs uninterrupted across two different sections and expansion has nowhere to go. Terrace expansion profiles for outdoor use must withstand greater temperature fluctuations and water — their material and sealing system differ from indoor profiles. Without the proper profile, the covering will eventually absorb the movement — and cracks will appear where least expected.
