The junction between the floor and the wall is one of the most critical connection points in building cladding. In screed, this connection requires free space for movement; in wet rooms, this connection must be watertight. The edge sealing tape can fulfill both functions — but these two tasks cannot always be accomplished with a single product.
The screed and the floor covering move due to thermal expansion and contraction. Screed laid tightly against the walls cannot relieve the stress caused by this movement — and cracks at the weakest point. The expansion edge tape is a flexible material placed along the walls before pouring the screed, providing 8–10 mm of free movement space. This movement occurs under the skirting board — it is invisible but essential for function.
Screed applied without expansion edge tape is one of the most common causes of premature failure of the floor covering system.
In showers, next to bathtubs, and at any wall-floor junction in wet rooms, reinforcing the waterproofing with edge tape is mandatory. The waterproof edge tape is made of flexible, embedable material that is pressed into the fresh surface of the first waterproofing layer — then covered by the second layer.
This tape prevents the membrane from cracking at the wall-floor junction — where movement and water load concentrate. Omitting it leaves this edge as the most vulnerable point of the waterproofing system.
