Bitumen sealant is one of the most common solutions for sealing outdoor joints and cracks exposed to water stress. It is flexible, permanently waterproof, and weather-resistant — suitable for joints and cracks where silicone or acrylic sealants exceed their UV or temperature tolerance limits.

What is bitumen sealant?

Bitumen sealant is a modified bitumen-based sealing material that forms a flexible, waterproof, and temperature-resistant coating. It is compatible with bitumen membrane waterproofing systems and is used at their joints, edges, and penetrations.

What is bitumen sealant used for?

Roofing joints: At connections of roof tiles, metal roofing, and chimneys, where the bitumen sealant waterproofs edges and joints.

Edges and penetrations of bitumen membrane waterproofing systems: On roof terraces, parking decks, and tunnels, sealing at membrane edges, drain connections, and wall joints is a mandatory step.

Outdoor cracks and movement zones: For temporary or permanent sealing of cracks on concrete and asphalt surfaces.

At foundations and basement connections: Where horizontal and vertical waterproofing systems meet, and sealing the joint is especially critical.

Limitations of bitumen sealant

Bitumen sealant gradually degrades and loses flexibility under UV exposure — a UV-stable topcoat is required for locations exposed to direct sunlight long-term. Additionally, bitumen softens with heat: at very high temperatures (such as on metal roofs with extreme southern exposure), it may flow.

Compatibility with other waterproofing systems

Bitumen sealant is only compatible with bitumen-based waterproofing systems. For brush-applied cementitious or resin-based waterproofing systems, the joint sealant must also be compatible with the specific system.
