Brush-applied cement-based waterproofing is one of the most widespread and reliable waterproofing solutions for damp indoor areas: it has been a proven category for decades in bathrooms, kitchen splash zones, basements, cellar walls, and swimming pool connections.
The brush-applied cement-based waterproofing membrane is a combination of cement, sand, and polymer additives, applied to the substrate with a brush, roller, or spatula. After curing, it forms a flexible or rigid, waterproof coating that can be tiled directly — unlike brush-applied PU or resin systems, no final covering layer is needed before embedding the substrate.
Rigid (crystalline) cement-based waterproofing: It grows a crystalline structure inside the concrete capillaries, waterproofing concrete structures exposed to water pressure from within. Suitable for waterproofing basement, cellar walls, and swimming pool concrete walls. The crystals, combined with the concrete’s self-cleaning mechanism, also exhibit self-healing properties for minor cracks.
Flexible cement-based waterproofing: Polymer modification gives flexibility to the membrane’s film after curing. It is used where structural movement carries a risk of minor cracking — above underfloor heating systems, terrace-floor connections, walls next to bathtubs. The flexible membrane does not allow even small openings to pass water.
After cement-based brush-applied waterproofing, tile adhesive can be applied directly — no neutralization step is needed, and the adhesive adheres well to the membrane surface. This is an advantage over PU and epoxy-based systems, where substrate preparation and compatibility checks require more care before tiling.
The membrane thickness is controlled by the number of layers — usually 2–3 layers are needed for the required waterproofing performance. Each layer must be fully dry before applying the next. Reinforcing tape embedding is mandatory at corners and joints.
