The most vulnerable points of the waterproofing system are not the large flat surfaces, but the penetrations, connections, and drains. The membrane can be neatly applied to the floor, but if the drain connection is not watertight, water will penetrate exactly where it finds the least resistance. System-compatible drains and fittings eliminate this risk.

What is a system-compatible drain?

A system-compatible drain has its own flange or embedment rim to which the liquid-applied or sheet waterproofing can be connected, embedded, or adhered. There is no free edge or unbonded connection between the drain and the waterproofing membrane — the connection is part of the system.

What types of drains and fittings exist?

Flanged drains for liquid-applied waterproofing: The upper edge of the drain is flat, allowing the liquid membrane and waterproofing mesh to be applied directly. The membrane passing over the flange creates a watertight connection.

Drains for sheet waterproofing: The bituminous or plastic waterproofing sheet can be adhered, welded, or pressed to the drain’s surrounding flange.

Pipe penetration collars: Where mechanical pipes penetrate the waterproofing — on terrace floors or flat roofs — the collar mechanically secures and seals the pipe penetration.

Expansion joint connectors: Where structural expansion joints pass through the waterproofing system — for example, at building mass junctions — a special flexible expansion joint connector is required.

Why is system certification important?

Guarantees for waterproofing systems generally cover the entire system — including drains and fittings. For certified installations, the drain type and installation method are specified by the certification.
