Need a natural, granular lime surface that breathes? Cement-based finishing plaster traps moisture, causing wall staining. Pure NHL 3.5 lime, 0–1.4 mm grain size: medium-grained final surface that breathes just like the plaster underneath. This is Kerakoll Biocalce Intonachino Granello.

  • Granular, natural surface for lime plaster: medium texture — 0–1.4 mm dolomite limestone and Carrara marble, applied with a trowel
  • Cement-based finishing plaster suffocates the breathable wall: no cement here — pure NHL 3.5 lime, the surface breathes just like the underlying layer
  • Part of the system: the granular fine plaster of the Biocalce restoration system — for lime base plaster (Intonaco, Zoccolatura) before painting
  • Moldy, saltpetre-affected old wall: naturally inhibits mold — B+ and F+ classification, fungus- and bacteria-resistant (CSTB)
  • Monument, adobe, old house: natural material matching the wall — lime, stone, and Carrara white marble, for conservation restoration
  • Thicker build-up, also levels: up to ≈ 10 mm total thickness (in multiple layers) — not only covers but also levels
  • Large surface, lots of hand smoothing: soft, lightweight mix — spreads quickly, workable for a long time, excellent workability
  • Closed living space, poor indoor air quality: EC1 plus low VOC emissions — IAQ Active, contributes to healthy indoor air

What is it suitable for?

Substrates: Biocalce lime plasters and restored, breathable plasters — Intonaco, Zoccolatura, Benesserebio. Intact, dry, solid old lime plaster. Monument and historic building restoration.

Spaces: Exterior and interior — facades and interior walls where a grained, natural, breathable surface is desired.

Function in the system: The Biocalce restoration system’s grained fine plaster (3rd layer) — applied over the base plaster, under paint or decorative plaster. Provides a medium-grained texture.

Not suitable for:

  • On contaminated, loose, dusty substrate
  • On old paint or decorative whitewash
  • On strongly salty (interstitial salt content) substrate
  • Directly on gypsum-based plaster — first Rasobuild Eco Consolidante surface sealer is required
  • As a standalone finished surface — sealed with paint or decorative plaster

The Biocalce restoration system

Biocalce Intonachino Granello is the system’s grained fine plaster. The complete breathable build-up:

Layer Product Role
1. Base plaster Rinzaffo adhesion promoter on compact/non-absorbent substrate
2. Base plaster Intonaco; for salty walls Zoccolatura / Benesserebio breathable plaster layer
3. Fine plaster Biocalce Intonachino Granello — this product grained, natural, paintable surface
3b. Polished top layer Tipo “00” — over Fino finest, polished surface
4. Surface breathable paint or decorative plaster final, breathable, colored surface

Surface (4th layer): breathable paint — Biocalce Tinteggio, Silicato Puro Pittura, indoors also Absolute Paint, on facades Kerakover Silox Pittura; decorative plaster — Silicato Puro, Marmorino, Spatolato.

Which fine plaster is needed?

  • Medium-grained, natural (base plaster): Biocalce Intonachino Granello (0–1.4 mm) — this product
  • Smooth, fine surface (base plaster): Fino (0–0.5 mm)
  • Finest, polished topcoat (over Fino): Tipo „00" (0–0.2 mm)

Frequently asked questions

How does the lime plaster surface become granular and natural?
Medium-grain lime smoothing plaster (fine plaster). On the Biocalce Intonaco base plaster, a 0–1.4 mm grain lime smoothing plaster is applied, giving a granular, natural, yet breathable and paintable surface. Do not apply cement-based fine plaster as it seals the vapor.

Which Biocalce Intonachino do I need — Fino, Granello, or Tipo „00"?
The grain size and layer order are decisive. Granello (0–1.4 mm) for base plaster, for a natural surface. Fino (0–0.5 mm) for base plaster, for a smooth surface. Tipo „00" (0–0.2 mm) is the finest, polished topcoat — applied over Fino.

Is the fine plaster breathable?
Yes. It is made from pure NHL 3.5 lime, without cement — the surface allows vapor to pass through just like the plaster underneath. Thus, the wall’s breathable system is not interrupted at the top layer.

Is it good for moldy, nitrate-affected walls?
Biocalce Intonachino Granello naturally inhibits mold and bacteria — B+ and F+ classification (CSTB). However, do not apply it directly on strongly salty, nitrate-affected surfaces — the salt load must be treated first.

How many m² does a 25 kg bag cover?
Material requirement ≈ 1.5 kg/m² per millimeter. For a 3 mm thick smoothing, a 25 kg bag covers ≈ 5.5 m². The total layer thickness maximum is ≈ 10 mm.

Is Biocalce Intonachino Granello paintable?
Yes, this is the paintable, granular base surface. Seal it with lime-based, breathable paint or fine plaster — this keeps the entire system breathable. Do not apply cement-based or sealed topcoats.

Why did the surface become blotchy and uneven in shade?
The product is natural, lime-based and unpainted — batch shades may vary, and the dried color depends on the substrate's absorbency and the weather. Therefore, use the same production batch on one surface and work evenly.

Can I apply it myself?
Yes — it can be easily applied with a trowel, like a traditional float, soft and workable for a long time. However, the complete restoration of wet, salty walls requires expertise — we also carry out the Biocalce system installation.

WHAT IS BIOCALCE?

Natural lime plasters and wall drying system

Natural hydraulic lime (NHL 3.5, EN 459-1) fired from pure, marly limestone at ~800–1000 °C without clay or cement. Breathable plasters compatible with old masonry, from primer to decorative plaster.

WHY LIME, NOT CEMENT?

The advantage of breathable NHL 3.5

The wall can dry because lime allows water vapor to pass through — much more openly than cement (μ ≈ 6 compared to cement’s ≈ 20), so moisture does not get trapped inside. It is salt-resistant, flexible, and does not damage the old wall when removed — making it the right material for old and historic walls. On its dry, alkaline surface, mold also finds it harder to settle.

WALL DRYING, WHERE NEEDED

For damp, saltpetre-affected walls

The WTA-certified, high porosity (≥ 40%) restoration plaster binds crystallizing salt in its pores and allows moisture to escape. It keeps the surface dry on damp, saltpetre-affected walls and plinths — permanently.
