Have a question? Call +36 70 400 2040 or write to hello@masterworks.hu.

Is the wall blistering or flaking at the base? Rising damp brings salt into the wall — salt expands and breaks off the plaster. Zoccolatura’s pores absorb the salt and release moisture. It keeps the wall dry — WTA-certified salt resistance. This is Kerakoll Biocalce Zoccolatura.

  • Salt efflorescence damages plaster: its pores absorb the salt — WTA 2-2-91/D certified salt resistance, ≥ 40% porosity
  • Damp, saltpeter base: keeps the wall dry — μ ≤ 3 high evaporation, low capillary water absorption
  • Mold, musty smell on old wall: natural bacteria and fungus repellent — pure lime, verified by CSTB method
  • Monument, old plastered wall: compatible with original materials — natural lime, pozzolan, stone, marble, granite
  • Exterior and interior base: resistant to salts, erosion, and detachment — R renovation/restoration mortar (EN 998-1)
  • Pure NHL 3.5 lime, no cement: breathable and natural — low CO₂, very low VOC emissions
  • By hand and machine: can be applied with plastering machine — WTA-certified mix, excellent cohesion
  • Part of the system: built on Biocalce Rinzaffo base plaster — without it, salts can penetrate the fresh plaster
Product family Biocalce moisture-removing system (Rinzaffo + Zoccolatura + Benesserebio)
Type Renovation/repair mortar, R (EN 998-1)
Salt resistance WTA 2-2-91/D — fulfilled

The Biocalce moisture-proofing system

Zoccolatura is the system’s salt-blocking layer. On salty, damp walls the full build-up is:

Layer Product Function
1st layer — base plaster Biocalce Rinzaffo breathable lime base plaster (adhesion enhancer), ≈ 15 kg/m²/cm
2nd layer — salt-blocking plaster Biocalce Zoccolatura (this product) salt-blocking breathable plaster, min. 2 cm, ≈ 12 kg/m²/cm
3rd layer — fine plaster Intonachino Fino, Granello; especially fine: Intonachino Tipo “00” smooth, paintable surface
4th layer — breathable paint Tinteggio, Silicato Puro Pittura, indoors Absolute Paint; on exterior facades Kerakover Silox Pittura lime-based, breathable painted surface
4th layer — finishing plaster Silicato Puro, Marmorino, Spatolato decorative breathable surface

Which layer is needed?

  • Base plaster (adhesion enhancer): Biocalce Rinzaffo — μ ≤ 20
  • Salt-damaged base, wall section: Biocalce Zoccolatura — this product, μ ≤ 3
  • Energy saving, mold-free warm wall: Benesserebio — thermal insulation, λ 0.14 W/(mK)

Frequently asked questions

Why does the plaster bulge and crumble on the wall?
Because rising damp brings salt into the wall, and the salt crystallizes, expanding and breaking off the plaster. The salt-blocking breathable restoration plaster (e.g., Kerakoll Biocalce Zoccolatura) traps the salt in its pores and releases the moisture — this way the wall dries and the plaster remains intact.

What is efflorescence (saltpetering), and how can it be stopped?
Efflorescence is the white crust of salt that emerges from the wall, brought up by rising moisture. It can be stopped with a salt-resistant, breathable remediation plaster. This binds the salt in its pores and lets moisture escape — Zoccolatura is proven salt-resistant according to WTA 2-2-91/D.

Which remediation plaster is needed for damp, salty base walls?
One that is salt-resistant and highly breathable. Biocalce Zoccolatura with μ ≤ 3 vapor diffusion and ≥ 40% porosity keeps the wall dry, with WTA-certified salt resistance. Suitable for brick, tuff, stone, and adobe alike.

What does WTA certification mean?
WTA is the German technical standard system for remediation plasters (moisture-proof plasters). Testing according to WTA 2-2-91/D confirms salt resistance and high porosity — the benchmark for genuine remediation plaster.

Is a base plaster needed under Zoccolatura?
Yes. Always apply the Biocalce Rinzaffo base plaster — it increases adhesion, regulates water absorption, and prevents salts from entering the fresh plaster.

How thick should it be applied?
Apply at a minimum thickness of 2 cm, extending at least 50 cm above the clear moisture mark. Maximum 2 cm per layer — additional layers come after the lower one hardens.

Zoccolatura or Benesserebio — which one do I need?
Use Zoccolatura only for salt damage, and Benesserebio for energy purposes. Zoccolatura is a salt-blocking base plaster for purely salt-damaged wall sections. The Benesserebio is thermal: warmer, energy-saving — ideal where thermal bridges and mold are issues.

How many m² does a 25 kg bag cover?
Material requirement ≈ 12 kg/m² per centimeter. For the mandatory 2 cm layer, a 25 kg bag covers ≈ 1 m².

When should I NOT use it?
Do not apply on dirty, dusty, loose substrates, old paint, or leveling layers. Remove salt deposits first. Cellular concrete panels require special surface preparation — consult with us.

Can I apply it myself?
Can be applied by hand or machine. However, restoring salty, damp walls requires expertise — removing old plaster, assessing salt levels, and rebuilding the entire system. We also undertake complete installation.

User manual

Substrate preparation: Completely remove the plaster at least 50 cm above the visible moisture mark. Remove weak bedding mortar and stones or bricks crumbled by salt. Clean off whitewash, old leveling, and salt deposits by hydraulic sandblasting or sandblasting, then wash with high pressure.

Base plaster: Always apply Biocalce Rinzaffo base plaster and wait for it to dry completely — this provides adhesion and prevents salt penetration.

Mixing (25 kg bag): ≈ 5.3 l of clean water, in a concrete mixer. Pour in the water first, then all the powder at once. It may appear dry for 1-2 minutes — do not add water then. Mix for 4-5 minutes until a homogeneous, lump-free mass forms. Do not add cement.

Application: By hand trowel or spraying. Create level bands, plaster, then during the hardening phase, smooth and level with a straightedge. Minimum thickness 2 cm, max 2 cm per layer. For walls of different ages or mixed masonry, add galvanized or synthetic alkali-resistant plaster reinforcement mesh to prevent cracking.

Curing: Moisten the hardened product during the first 24 hours.

Temperature: +5 °C – +35 °C. Protect the surface from strong sun and wind.

Cleaning: Clean tools with water while fresh. Once set, the product can only be removed mechanically.

Kerakoll Biocalce Zoccolatura salt-blocking restorative lime plaster (plinth)

PRODUCT ADVANTAGES

- Natural, porous and highly breathable, which allows the wall to breathe freely
- Highly resistant to salts, high evaporation capacity, low capillary absorption
- WTA certified

WHAT IS BIOCALCE?

Natural lime plasters and wall drying system

Natural hydraulic lime (NHL 3.5, EN 459-1) fired from pure, marly limestone at ~800–1000 °C without clay or cement. Breathable plasters compatible with old masonry, from primer to decorative plaster.

WHY LIME, NOT CEMENT?

The advantage of breathable NHL 3.5

The wall can dry because lime allows water vapor to pass through — much more openly than cement (μ ≈ 6 compared to cement’s ≈ 20), so moisture does not get trapped inside. It is salt-resistant, flexible, and does not damage the old wall when removed — making it the right material for old and historic walls. On its dry, alkaline surface, mold also finds it harder to settle.

WALL DRYING, WHERE NEEDED

For damp, saltpetre-affected walls

The WTA-certified, high porosity (≥ 40%) restoration plaster binds crystallizing salt in its pores and allows moisture to escape. It keeps the surface dry on damp, saltpetre-affected walls and plinths — permanently.
