Need a smooth, paintable surface for breathable lime plaster? Cement putty seals moisture — causes spotting, paint peeling. Pure NHL 3.5 lime, 0–0.5 mm grain: smooth, paintable surface that breathes just like the plaster underneath. This is Kerakoll Biocalce Intonachino Fino.

  • Smooth, paintable surface on lime plaster: fine, even smoothing — 0–0.5 mm Carrara marble and quartz sand, applied with a trowel
  • Cement putty suffocates breathable plaster: no cement here — pure NHL 3.5 lime, the surface breathes just like the underlying layer
  • Part of the system: the fine plaster of the Biocalce restoration system — for lime base plaster (Intonaco, Zoccolatura) before painting
  • Moldy, saltpetre-affected old wall: naturally inhibits mold — B+ and F+ rating, fungus and bacteria resistant (CSTB)
  • Monument, adobe, old house: natural material matching the wall — lime and Carrara white marble, for conservation restoration
  • Large surface, lots of manual smoothing: soft, lightweight mix — quickly spreadable, long working time, excellent workability
  • Closed living space, poor indoor air quality: EC1 plus low VOC emissions — IAQ Active, contributes to healthy indoor air
  • Finish: breathable, lime-based paint or noble plaster provides the final surface — Intonachino Fino is the paintable base

What is it suitable for?

Substrates: Biocalce lime plasters and restored, breathable plasters — Intonaco, Zoccolatura, Benesserebio. Undamaged, dry, solid old lime plaster. Monument and historic building restoration.

Spaces: Exterior and interior — facades and interior walls where a smooth, breathable, paintable surface is desired.

Function in the system: The Biocalce restoration system’s fine plaster (3rd layer) — applied over the base plaster, under paint or decorative plaster. Provides a smooth, fine surface.

Not suitable for:

  • On contaminated, loose, dusty substrate
  • On old paint or decorative whitewash
  • On strongly salty (interstitial salt content) substrate
  • Directly on gypsum-based plaster — first Rasobuild Eco Consolidante surface sealer is needed
  • Standalone, finished final surface — sealed with paint or decorative plaster

The Biocalce restoration system

Biocalce Intonachino Fino is the system’s fine plaster. The complete breathable build-up:

Layer Product Role
1. Base plaster Rinzaffo adhesion promoter on compact/non-absorbent substrate
2. Base plaster Intonaco; for salty walls Zoccolatura / Benesserebio breathable plaster layer
3. Fine plaster Biocalce Intonachino Fino — this product smooth, paintable surface
3b. Polished top layer Tipo “00” — above Fino finest, polished surface
4. Surface breathable paint or decorative plaster final, breathable, colored surface

Surface (4th layer):
breathable paint — Biocalce Tinteggio, Silicato Puro Pittura, indoors also Absolute Paint, on facades Kerakover Silox Pittura; decorative plaster — Silicato Puro, Marmorino, Spatolato.

Which fine plaster is needed?

  • Smooth, fine surface (base plaster): Biocalce Intonachino Fino (0–0.5 mm) — this product
  • Medium-grain, natural (base plaster): Granello (0–1.4 mm)
  • Finest, polished topcoat (over Fino): Tipo “00” (0–0.2 mm)

Frequently asked questions

How does lime plaster become smooth and paintable?
With lime finishing plaster (fine plaster). On the Biocalce Intonaco base plaster, a fine-grained lime finishing plaster is applied — 0–0.5 mm — which provides a smooth, paintable, and breathable surface. Do not smooth with cement-based putty as it seals the vapor.

Which Biocalce Intonachino do I need — Fino, Granello, or Tipo “00”?
Grain size and layer order are decisive. Fino (0–0.5 mm) for base plaster, for a smooth surface. Granello (0–1.4 mm) for base plaster, for a natural surface. Tipo “00” (0–0.2 mm) is the finest, polished topcoat — applied over Fino.

Is the fine plaster breathable?
Yes. It is made from pure NHL 3.5 lime, without cement — the smooth surface allows vapor to pass through just like the plaster underneath. Thus, the wall’s breathable system is not interrupted at the top layer.

Is it good for moldy, nitrate-affected walls?
Biocalce Intonachino Fino naturally inhibits mold and bacteria — B+ and F+ rating (CSTB). However, do not apply it directly on strongly salty, nitrate-affected surfaces — the salt load must be treated first.

How many m² does a 25 kg bag cover?
Material requirement ≈ 1.6 kg/m² per millimeter. For a 2 mm thick smoothing, one 25 kg bag covers ≈ 7.8 m². The total layer thickness is a maximum of ≈ 5 mm.

Is Biocalce Intonachino Fino paintable?
Yes, this is the paintable base surface. Seal it with lime-based, breathable paint or fine plaster — this keeps the entire system breathable. Do not apply cement-based or sealed topcoats.

Why did the surface become blotchy and uneven in shade?
The product is natural, lime-based and unpainted — batch shades may vary, and the dried color depends on the substrate's absorbency and the weather. Therefore, use the same production batch on one surface and work evenly.

Can I apply it myself?
Yes — it can be easily applied with a trowel, like a traditional float, soft and workable for a long time. However, the complete restoration of wet, salty walls requires expertise — we also carry out the Biocalce system.

WHAT IS BIOCALCE?

Natural lime plasters and wall drying system

Natural hydraulic lime (NHL 3.5, EN 459-1) fired from pure, marly limestone at ~800–1000 °C without clay or cement. Breathable plasters compatible with old masonry, from primer to decorative plaster.

WHY LIME, NOT CEMENT?

The advantage of breathable NHL 3.5

The wall can dry because lime allows water vapor to pass through — much more openly than cement (μ ≈ 6 compared to cement’s ≈ 20), so moisture does not get trapped inside. It is salt-resistant, flexible, and does not damage the old wall when removed — making it the right material for old and historic walls. On its dry, alkaline surface, mold also finds it harder to settle.

WALL DRYING, WHERE NEEDED

For damp, saltpetre-affected walls

The WTA-certified, high porosity (≥ 40%) restoration plaster binds crystallizing salt in its pores and allows moisture to escape. It keeps the surface dry on damp, saltpetre-affected walls and plinths — permanently.
