Mirror-smooth wall surface that breathes? Gypsum putty is smooth but seals moisture — lime plaster stains. NHL 3.5 lime, 0–0.2 mm: polished, breathable top layer for fine plaster, workable like gypsum putty. This is Kerakoll Biocalce Intonachino Tipo “00”.

  • The smoothest, polished finishing surface for fine plaster: finest grain — 0–0.2 mm Carrara white marble, applied over Fino with a putty knife, polished final effect
  • Gypsum putty seals the breathable wall: here there is no gypsum, no cement — pure lime and mineral geo-binder, the surface breathes the same
  • Workable like gypsum putty: easily applied with a putty knife — familiar technique, breathable result
  • Part of the system: the final fine smoothing layer of the Biocalce restoration system — for lime plaster (Intonaco, Zoccolatura) before painting
  • Monument, adobe, old house: natural material matching the wall — lime and Carrara white marble, for conservation restoration
  • Enclosed living space, poor indoor air quality: EC1 plus low VOC emissions — IAQ Active, contributes to healthy indoor air
  • Verified environmental data: EPD environmental product declaration — GreenBuilding Rating 4
  • Finish: breathable, lime-based paint or noble plaster provides the final surface — Tipo “00” is the paintable, smooth base

What is it suitable for?

Substrates: Biocalce lime fine plaster — typically Intonachino Fino and Granello — for final polished smoothing. Top layer for restored, smooth breathable lime plasters. Monument and historic building restoration. Due to the fine (0–0.2 mm) grain size, it is applied over the fine plaster, not directly on the rough base plaster.

Areas: Exterior and interior — interior walls and facades where the smoothest, polished, breathable surface is desired.

Function in the system: The Biocalce restoration system’s final, polished topcoat — applied over the fine plaster (typically over Fino), under paint or decorative plaster. Provides the finest surface.

Not suitable for:

  • On dirty, loose, dusty substrate
  • On old paint or decorative whitewash
  • On substrates containing salt in the pores
  • Directly on rough base plaster — first fine plaster (e.g. Fino) is needed
  • Directly on gypsum-based plaster — first a Rasobuild Eco Consolidante surface sealer is required
  • As a standalone, finished final surface — sealed with paint or decorative plaster

The Biocalce restoration system

Biocalce Intonachino Tipo „00" is the system’s final, polished topcoat — applied over the fine plaster. The complete breathable build-up:

Layer Product Role
1. Base plaster Rinzaffo adhesion promoter, on compact/non-absorbent substrate
2. Body plaster Intonaco; for salty walls Zoccolatura / Benesserebio breathable plaster layer
3. Fine plaster Intonachino Fino / Granello smooth or grainy surface, on base plaster
3b. Polished topcoat Biocalce Intonachino Tipo „00" — this product (over Fino) the finest, polished topcoat
4. Surface breathable paint or decorative plaster final, breathable, colored surface

Surface (4th layer): breathable paint — Biocalce Tinteggio, Silicato Puro Pittura, indoors also Absolute Paint, on facades Kerakover Silox Pittura; decorative plaster — Silicato Puro, Marmorino, Spatolato.

Which fine plaster is needed?

  • Smooth, fine surface (base plaster): Fino (0–0.5 mm)
  • Medium grain, natural (for base plaster): Granello (0–1.4 mm)
  • Finest, polished top layer (over Fino): Biocalce Intonachino Tipo "00" (0–0.2 mm) — this product

Frequently Asked Questions

How to get a mirror-smooth, polished surface on the plaster?
With the finest lime top layer. A smoothing material with 0–0.2 mm grain size is applied in a thin layer over the fine plaster (typically Intonachino Fino) — this creates the smoothest, polished yet breathable surface. Do not apply gypsum putty on it, as it blocks vapor.

Which Biocalce Intonachino do I need — Fino, Granello, or Tipo "00"?
Grain size and layer order are decisive. Fino (0–0.5 mm) for the base plaster, for a smooth surface. Granello (0–1.4 mm) for the base plaster, for a natural surface. Tipo "00" (0–0.2 mm) is the finest, polished top layer — applied over Fino.

Breathable putty instead of gypsum putty?
On breathable surfaces, yes — Tipo "00" is a breathable lime putty instead of gypsum putty. It can be worked with a trowel the same way but is pure lime-based and does not block vapor. The lime plaster system’s breathability is not interrupted even at the final top layer.

Is the fine smoothing breathable?
Yes. It is made from pure NHL 3.5 lime and mineral geo-binder, without cement or gypsum — the smooth surface allows vapor to pass through, like the plaster underneath.

How many m² does a 20 kg bag cover?
Material requirement ≈ 1 kg/m² per millimeter. For a 1 mm thick smoothing, a 20 kg bag covers ≈ 20 m². The total layer thickness is max ≈ 2 mm.

Is Biocalce Intonachino Tipo "00" paintable?
Yes, this is the paintable, smooth base surface. Seal it with lime-based, breathable paint or fine plaster — this keeps the entire system breathable. Do not apply cement or closed top layers.

Why did the surface become blotchy and uneven in shade?
The product is natural, lime-based and unpainted — the shade of batches may vary, and the dried color depends on the substrate's moisture absorption and the weather. Therefore, use the same production batch on one surface and work evenly.

Can I apply it myself?
Yes — it can be easily applied with a trowel, like gypsum putty, soft and workable for a long time. However, the complete restoration of wet, salty walls requires expertise — we also execute the Biocalce system.

WHAT IS BIOCALCE?

Natural lime plasters and wall-drying system

Natural hydraulic lime (NHL 3.5, EN 459-1), fired at approximately 800–1000 °C from pure marl limestone, without clay or cement. Breathable plasters compatible with old masonry, from primer to decorative plaster.

WHY LIME, NOT CEMENT?

The advantage of breathable NHL 3.5

The wall can dry because lime allows water vapour to pass through—much more openly than cement (μ ≈ 6 compared with cement’s ≈ 20), so moisture does not become trapped inside. It is salt-resistant and flexible, and does not damage old walls when removed—making it the right material for old and listed buildings. Mould also finds it harder to take hold on its dry, alkaline surface.

WALL DRYING WHERE NEEDED

For damp, salt-affected walls

The WTA-certified renovation plaster, with a high pore volume (≥ 40%), binds crystallizing salts within its pores while allowing water vapour to escape. It keeps surfaces dry on damp, salt-affected walls and plinths—durably.
