Broken tiles, creaking parquet, and rippling vinyl are most often caused not by the quality of the material but by an uneven substrate. Even a millimeter difference in level is enough for the flexible adhesive layer to distribute the load unevenly, causing it to fail in the weakest spots over time. Normal-setting leveling compound solves this problem.

What is normal-setting leveling compound?

Normal-setting leveling compound is a cement-based, self-leveling or trowelable substrate preparation material used to create an even base for indoor and covered outdoor floors. Its role is not structural—it does not bear loads or replace screed—but serves as the final layer beneath the flooring that ensures geometric perfection. It can be used under tiles, parquet, vinyl, carpet, and flexible coverings alike.

What layer thickness can it be applied in?

Normal-setting leveling compound can be applied in layers from 3 to 50 mm thick. This range covers the vast majority of cases: from repairing small local depressions and level differences to smoothing larger uneven areas. For thicknesses above 50 mm, screed or special thick-layer leveling compounds must be used.

How long before the leveling compound can be covered?

Normal-setting leveling compound is generally ready for covering after 24 hours—this time may vary depending on temperature and humidity. Full load-bearing capacity develops more slowly: light foot traffic is allowed sooner, but the manufacturer's specified waiting time must be observed before installing the final flooring.

In the case of underfloor heating, the heating circuit must be turned off before applying the leveling compound, and after application, a 28-day waiting period is required before the first heating—rushing this step can cause cracking.

What should be considered when using normal-setting leveling compound?

Proper substrate preparation—cleaning, removing dust and loose parts, and applying primer if necessary—is essential for the adhesion of the leveling compound. Without primer, the compound will draw the water needed for setting from the substrate, leading to hairline cracks or delamination. For calcium sulfate screeds, a special compatible leveling compound must be used.

Normal-setting vs. fast-setting leveling compound

If the timeframe is tight—such as in interior renovations, commercial spaces, or hotels—fast-setting leveling compound can be covered after 2–4 hours. Normal-setting materials have longer setting times but are generally less expensive and easier to work with. The choice depends on balancing the schedule and project budget.
