Inert materials and fillers are relatively unseen but functionally crucial components of construction material systems. The grain size of screed affects strength, the filler size in plaster determines texture, and the aggregate sprinkled on industrial floor coatings defines the slip resistance class.

What are inert fillers used for?

In plaster systems: Quartz sand and calcite-based fillers determine the grain size and texture of the plaster. Fine fillers are used for smoothing plaster, coarser grains for textured base plaster and fine plaster.

In screed and concrete: The grain size distribution (gradation), together with the binder-to-aggregate ratio, determines the final strength and shrinkage properties of the screed.

For industrial floor coatings as slip resistance: Quartz, corundum, or silicon carbide grains sprinkled into fresh epoxy or PU coatings create a slip-resistant surface profile. Grain size influences the slip resistance class (R9–R13)—finer grains yield a lower class, coarser grains a higher class.

On natural stone surfaces: Decorative quartz grains and colored aggregates are aesthetic components of certain decorative plasters and surface treatments.

Quality considerations

The quality of inert fillers—grain size distribution, purity, hardness—directly affects the final performance of the material. Contaminated or inhomogeneous fillers reduce the strength and appearance of the material.
