A pour thicker than 60 mm? At that point, you need fine concrete rather than mortar. Gravel makes it fine concrete: washed, graded, 3–6 mm. This is Kerakoll Ghiaia 3.6, the aggregate gravel for Geolite and Metric poured mortars, as well as Geocalce lime screed.

  • Layer thickness over 60 mm: 25–40% gravel by weight relative to the powder — the aggregate skeleton is adjusted to the pouring thickness, reducing the heat of hydration
  • Part of the system: Geolite Magma, Geolite Magma 20 and Metric Track poured mortars — the manufacturer prescribes aggregate gravel for these products
  • Lime screed and concrete subfloor: 100 kg Geocalce G Antisismico + 25 kg Ghiaia 3.6 + 13 l of water — factory formula, applied using a compactor
  • Concrete mixer, pump mixer: excellent mixability — can be worked without difficulty until a homogeneous mix is obtained
  • Do not let it separate from old concrete: excellent adhesion to hydraulic binders — washed, graded gravel, free of impurities, is added to the mix
  • Large pours, pallet quantities: 25 kg bag, 1,500 kg/pallet (60 bags) — unlimited storage life, the remainder does not expire
  • Does not build on its own: without a binder, it is only gravel — together with Geolite Magma or Geocalce G Antisismico powder, it produces fine concrete
Type Washed, graded aggregate gravel
Standard For mortar and fine concrete according to EN 12620 · EN 1504-3
Aggregate size 3–6 mm
Mixing ratio 25–40% by weight relative to the powder (25–40 kg / 100 kg)

What is it suitable for?

Kerakoll poured mortars in thick layers:

  • Geolite Magma, Geolite Magma 20, Metric Track — for layer thicknesses over 60 mm, mixed in at 25–40% by weight
  • Geocalce G Antisismico — screed and concrete mix according to the manufacturer's formula (100 kg + 25 kg)

Applications:

  • Filling of industrial floors and smooth concrete surfaces between 60–100 mm, deep cross-section restoration
  • Lime screed, structural subfloor, substrate for bonded coverings, road and concrete surface repairs
  • Flowable and self-compacting fine concrete according to EN 1504-3

Not suitable for:

  • As a standalone material, without a binder — not a ready-to-use product and not a surface suitable for covering
  • For layer thicknesses under 60 mm — the data sheet prescribes gravel only above this thickness
  • For plaster, tile adhesive and floor levelling compound where the TDS does not prescribe it
  • For a 6–10 mm aggregate skeleton — the former Kerabuild Ghiaia range cannot be replaced with this product

Geolite / Geocalce system — mixing ratios

System Powder Ghiaia 3.6 Water What does it provide?
Geolite Magma 100 kg 25 – 40 kg according to the technical data sheet For pouring fine concrete in layers over 60 mm thick
Geolite Magma 20 100 kg 25 – 40 kg according to the technical data sheet For anchoring fine concrete in thick layers
Metric Track 100 kg 25 – 40 kg according to the technical data sheet Fine concrete for repairing road surfaces and concrete surfaces
Geocalce G Antisismico 100 kg (4 bags) 25 kg (1 bag) 13 l Lime screed - with a compactor
Geocalce G Antisismico 100 kg (4 bags) 25 kg (1 bag) 15 l Concrete-consistency mix - with a vibrator

The amount of water for Geolite and Metric products must be dosed according to the value indicated on the respective bag and technical data sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What should be done when pouring a layer thicker than 60 mm?

Gravel must be mixed into the mortar. Add 25–40% aggregate gravel by weight to the cast mortars Geolite Magma and Metric Track. This produces fine concrete with lower heat of hydration.

Which gravel is needed for concrete repair mortar?

Washed, graded 3–6 mm gravel, in accordance with EN 12620. Kerakoll specifies Ghiaia 3.6 for this purpose. Washed, graded material provides a known particle size distribution - this is the essence of EN 12620.

How much gravel is needed for 100 kg of mortar?

25–40 kg, or 1–1.6 bags. The technical data sheets for Geolite Magma, Geolite Magma 20 and Metric Track all specify 25–40% by weight. The exact ratio depends on the layer thickness.

How is a lime screed made with Geocalce?

100 kg Geocalce G Antisismico + 25 kg aggregate gravel + 13 l water. This is the manufacturer's screed recipe and can be installed using a compactor. For a concrete-consistency mix, use 15 l of water and a vibrator.

What does EN 12620 mean?

EN 12620 is the European standard for aggregates used in concrete. It specifies particle size distribution, cleanliness and durability. Ghiaia 3.6 is washed gravel that complies with it.

When is aggregate gravel NOT needed in the mortar?

Not for layer thicknesses under 60 mm. The technical data sheet requires gravel only for layers over 60 mm. It is also not suitable for plaster, adhesive or screed levelling compounds.

Can it be purchased separately?

Yes, it can also be ordered separately in bags. It is useful when the mortar is already available or when gravel needs to be added afterwards due to a thicker layer. Packaging: 25 kg bag, 60 bags per pallet.

Can I mix it myself?

Yes, in a concrete mixer or a pump mixer. Mix until homogeneous, following the manufacturer's ratios. The product is intended for professionals - we also undertake the installation for larger pours.

Is it the same as the old Kerabuild Ghiaia?

No. Kerabuild Ghiaia was 6–10 mm gravel, while Ghiaia 3.6 has a 3–6 mm particle size distribution. The finer aggregate was designed for the cast mortars Geolite Magma and Metric Track, as well as the Geocalce G Antisismico screed mix.

How long can it be stored?

For an unlimited period in the original bag. The gravel does not set or expire. Any unopened bags can be used on the next project.

User manual

When to mix: For cast geo-mortar, the layer must be at least 10 mm thick; the maximum is 60–100 mm, depending on the type and size of the work. Where a thicker layer is required, fine concrete must be prepared to reduce the heat of hydration: add 25–40% by weight of Ghiaia 3.6 to the powder (25–40 kg for every 100 kg of powder). This optimizes the particle-size distribution curve for the application thickness.

Substrate: The concrete must be clean, sound and rough - loose parts must be removed by scrubbing or sandblasting. Clean the surface with compressed air or a high-pressure washer, then wet it until saturated but free of surface water. For horizontal concrete surfaces, an alternative is to apply a bonding bridge to the dry substrate (Geolite Base, Primer Unit or Epobinder - according to the data sheet for the selected mortar).

Mixing: Concrete mixer, pump mixer or low-speed mixing paddle. Mix until homogeneous and lump-free. The mixing ratio and mixing sequence are specified in the data sheet for the selected mortar and must be followed.

Lime screed with Geocalce G Antisismico: Earth-moist consistency mix: 100 kg (4 bags) of Geocalce G Antisismico + 25 kg (1 bag) of Ghiaia 3.6 + 13 l of water for 125 kg of mix, installed using a compactor. For a concrete-consistency mix, use the same quantities with 15 l of water and install with a vibrator.

Curing: For cast geo-mortar, keep the surface damp for at least 24 hours and provide expansion joints. The application temperature must comply with the data sheet for the selected mortar (Geolite Magma: between +5 °C and +40 °C).

Detailed product-specific requirements can be found in the technical data sheet for the selected mortar.
