A Modernist Villa in Antwerp

The modernist villa in Antwerp is at once a quiet family home and a secluded fortress, defined by changing volumes, clean lines, and creeping shadows. The upper levels follow the strict architectural principles of the mid-century movement: large, bright rooms filled with space to move, warmed by the dusty tones of Decor Paint; natural materials such as robust wood, stone, and glass; and restrained, functional furniture.

In the main living room, a pure white staircase winds between the floors in Wallpaper KK 117, framing a monumental Microresina KK 11-coloured window overlooking a forest filled with trees. Contemporary elements make their way into the lower level. The cosy ground-floor kitchen is enlivened by speckled terrazzo and pink-toned cabinets, providing a vibrant contrast to the purity above.

The clean lines, paired with the travertine stone and the neutral palette of the KK 117 and KK 91 colours, create an atmosphere that draws attention to the objects and furnishings, such as this vintage medieval sofa made of chestnut-coloured leather.

The vibrant, speckled terrazzo in shades of grey, pink, and black adds a playful feel to the otherwise understated kitchen design, whose floor is in the anthracite-coloured Cementoresina KK 11. The bespoke, ribbed wooden cabinetry in powder pink Microresina KK 113 references the building’s exposed brick façade, creating a visual connection between the interior and exterior.

The sophisticated texture of Cementoresina and Patina, used for floors and bath and shower surrounds, extends the continuity of the neutral palette in the adjacent rooms. In the primary bathroom, the continuous KK 53 and KK 91 surfaces are balanced by multicoloured yellow mosaic tiles, creating a sunnier atmosphere.

The darker elements of the home on the ground floor—the warm grey surfaces of the Cementoresina floor and Patina Living ceiling, both in the KK 70 color—act as a weighty foil to the sun-drenched rooms above. The cast-concrete washbasin with an industrial-style brass faucet in the bathroom on the lower level fits perfectly with the Wallcrete walls, creating a striking visual rhythm throughout the house.
