Want to grout the next day but the adhesive hasn’t set yet? Standard tile adhesive is slow — you wait a day before walking on the surface. This one is walkable in 3 hours. Sets even in cold, and has no hazard label during application. This is Kerakoll H40 Advanced.

Made in Italy. Kerakoll, Sassuolo — building material innovation since 1968. H40 Advanced is the fast-setting member of the renewed H40 tile adhesive line.

  • Fast handover: walkable and grouting-ready within 3 hours — you can proceed the same day, no project delay
  • Work doesn’t stop in cold: sets even at +5 °C — you can work in autumn, winter, and unheated spaces
  • Water-sensitive natural stone: no staining, no blistering — fast setting, less moisture remains under the stone
  • No rush even with large tiles: ≈ 45 minutes open time — despite fast setting, there is time for double spreading and adjustment
  • No hazard label during application: non-irritant classification, no risk label — safer for daily work
  • Floor can be heated sooner: fast setting — you can start underfloor heating after a shorter wait, S1 deformability withstands cycles
  • Large tile, full bedding: up to 160x320 cm — thixotropic & fluid mix, no hollow spots, no cracking
  • Gres, ceramic, stone, mosaic, glass: no product mistakes — one tile adhesive for everything
  • Safe for indoor use: EC1 Plus — very low VOC emissions

What is it suitable for?

Tiling materials: Gres tiles in all sizes — from 30x30 cm tiles to 160x320 cm large slabs. Thin and fabric-reinforced laminated back tiles. Ceramic, marble, natural stone, glass mosaic, terracotta, clinker, thermal and sound insulating panels. Especially recommended for water-sensitive natural stone.

Substrates: Cement screed, concrete, cement-based self-leveling compound (Planogel Ultra). Drywall, fiber-reinforced cement board. Lime and cement plaster, brick, aerated concrete. Waterproofing layer (Aquastop Nanoflex, Aquastop Green, Nanodefense Eco). Existing, fixed, intact covering. Underfloor heating (water-based, electric, heat-distributing plate, grooved systems).

After priming: Gypsum, anhydrite, wood, metal, PVC — Active Prime Fix or Active Prime Grip, indoor use only.

Spaces:

  • Residential: apartment, bathroom, kitchen, terrace, balcony
  • Commercial: restaurant, hotel, shop, office, waiting room
  • Industrial: hall, warehouse, factory
  • Special: pool (≈ ready to fill after 7 days), sauna, wellness, facade, street furniture

Not suitable for:

  • Substrate unevenness over 15 mm — first use self-leveling (Planogel Ultra)
  • For reactive waterproof membrane (RM type, EN 14891) — H40 Extreme reactive tile adhesive is required
  • Does not replace waterproofing on outdoor water-exposed surfaces by itself

Different task? No rush, standard tiling: H40 Gel with extended open time. Moving substrate, facade, large tile reinforced with fabric: H40 Tech ultra-flexible. Industrial kitchen, lab, chemical exposure: H40 Extreme hybrid reactive.

Frequently asked questions

How long does tile adhesive take to set?
Standard tile adhesive becomes walkable in ≈ 24 hours. Kerakoll H40 Advanced fast-setting tile adhesive is walkable and groutable in 3 hours at +23 °C — you can proceed the same day.

Which tile adhesive is needed for quick handover?
A fast-setting, C2F-rated tile adhesive is required. H40 Advanced can be grouted in ≈ 3 hours, so work doesn’t stop for a day during tight deadlines or property handovers.

Can tiles be bonded in cold conditions?
Yes, with fast-setting tile adhesive. H40 Advanced sets even at +5 °C — walkable in ≈ 8 hours. Tiling continues in autumn, winter, or unheated rooms.

What does the C2F TE S1 class mean?
EN 12004 classification: C2 = high adhesion, F = fast setting, TE = improved workability (long open time, low slip), S1 = deformable. Compared to H40 Gel, the key difference is F — fast setting.

When to use H40 Advanced and when H40 Gel?
Use H40 Advanced when speed matters: tight deadlines, cold weather, water-sensitive natural stone. Use H40 Gel if you have time and need longer (≈ 60 minutes) open time for large tiles.

Why is fast-setting adhesive good for natural stone?
Water-sensitive natural stone absorbs a lot of moisture from slow adhesives — it can stain or blister. Fast-setting H40 Advanced sets quickly, reducing moisture absorption time.

How many m² does a 25 kg bag of H40 Advanced cover?
Material requirement ≈ 1.25 kg / m² / mm layer thickness. A 25 kg bag covers ≈ 4-5 m² for small tiles (4-5 mm bedding), ≈ 2-2.5 m² for large slabs (8-10 mm, double application).

What is the difference between pot life and open time?
Pot life measures how long the mixed adhesive remains workable in the bucket — about 40 minutes for gray, about 30 minutes for white. Open time (≈ 45 minutes) refers to the notched adhesive spread on the wall: the tile can be placed within this time.

Can I apply it myself?
Yes, but fast setting demands a tighter schedule — good preparation and a notched trowel are important. For underfloor heating, large tiles, or critical substrates, rely on our Kerakoll-certified tiler.

Can it be used in pools or showers?
Suitable for pools — filling after ≈ 7 days, which is shorter than slower adhesives due to fast setting. Waterproofing is required first for showers (Aquastop Nanoflex or Nanodefense Eco), then H40 Advanced is used for bonding.

H40 System

Primers: on gypsum, anhydrite, wood, metal, or PVC substrates, a primer is required before bonding — Active Prime Fix or Active Prime Grip (EP21 for H40 Extreme). Highly absorbent cement substrates can be pre-wetted or primed.

Waterproofing: in wet areas, H40 provides a monolithic, waterproof system with the Kerakoll waterproofing product line.

Areas of application

Substrate preparation: Flat, cured, intact, dry surface. Moisturize absorbent cement substrates or Active Prime Fix / Active Prime Grip prime. Gypsum, anhydrite, wood, metal, PVC only after priming, indoors.

Mixing (25 kg bag): For thin layer thickness, full back coverage use gray ≈ 6.1 l water / white ≈ 7.6 l. For wall thin and thick layers gray ≈ 5.4 l / white ≈ 6.9 l. Mix with a machine until lump-free, remix after short standing. Due to fast setting, mix only as much as you can use in ≈ 40 minutes.

Application: Notched trowel adjusted to tile format. For large tiles (>60 cm) and thin tiles, also apply on the back — double application. Pull a test tile, check full bedding. Maintain expansion and perimeter joints.

Setting times: At +23 °C walkable and grouting in ≈ 3 hours, on walls ≈ 2 hours. At +5 °C ≈ 8 hours. Correction time ≥ 6 minutes. Times extend in cold.

Underfloor heating: For wet, electric, heat-distributing plate, milling systems. Before tiling, heat up then cool back to operating temperature. Maintain expansion joints above underfloor heating.

Facade: Double application mandatory. Substrate tensile strength ≥ 1 N/mm². For tiles larger than 30 cm, mechanical safety fixing should be considered. For tiles over 60 cm, add Top Latex Eco to mixing water.

Pool/shower: Waterproofing mandatory on substrate (Aquastop Nanoflex, Nanodefense Eco). Reactive waterproofing (RM type, EN 14891) H40 Extreme is required. Pool can be filled after ≈ 7 days.

Temperature: +5 °C – +35 °C. Protect fresh tiling from heavy rain for at least 6 hours. Do not work above +35 °C.

Cleaning: In fresh state, clean tools and tile surface with water. Hardened tile adhesive only mechanically.
