Laying large tiles? Cladding a facade? The substrate moves, heat expands. Rigid adhesive cracks, tiles detach. Then comes demolition and re-tiling. The flexible gel adhesive moves with the substrate and holds. GT-3 — the highest flexibility rating. This is Kerakoll H40 Tech.

Made in Italy. Kerakoll, Sassuolo — building material innovation since 1968. The H40 name has been a reliable reference in tiling for over 50 years.

  • Large and thin tiles (up to 160x320 cm): the liquid gel fully wets the tile back — full bedding under the tile
  • Facade and terrace: holds between 40 °C and +90 °C — thermal fluctuations do not crack the bond
  • Moving, deforming substrates: S2 deformability, GT-3 classification — safe on cracked substrates and underfloor heating
  • Tiles reinforced with fabric and resin backing on the reverse side: the gel fully envelops the back structure — structural bonding even on problematic tiles
  • Large tile alignment is time-sensitive: long open time (≥60 minutes) and 20 minutes adjustment time — no rushing, precise tile positioning possible
  • For walls and floors, from one bag: thixotropic mix for walls, liquid for floors — does not slip, easy to spread with a trowel

What is it suitable for?

Substrates: Cement screed, concrete, lime and cement plaster, drywall, fiber-reinforced cement board, underfloor heating, waterproofing systems, existing coverings, brick, cellular concrete, thermal and sound insulation boards. On gypsum, anhydrite, wood, metal, and PVC substrates after applying Active Prime Fix or Active Prime Grip primer (wood, metal, PVC only indoors).

Covering materials: Gres tiles in all sizes, large format and laminated gres tiles, thin tiles, resin-backed gres tiles, ceramic, natural stone, marble, glass mosaic, glass tiles, terracotta, clinker.

Areas: Interior and exterior, floor and wall, terrace and balcony, facade, swimming pool and fountain, sauna and wellness. Residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

Not suitable for: filling substrate unevenness greater than 15 mm. Without primer on gypsum, anhydrite, wood, metal, and PVC substrates. Not directly on bitumen or tar-based waterproofing membranes — screed is required first.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it more expensive than a traditional tile adhesive?
Because it won’t crack if the substrate moves. The gel formula is flexible with S2 deformability. Repairing a detached facade tile costs many times more than the adhesive.

What does the GT-3 rating mean?
GT is Kerakoll’s own test method for adhesive flexibility. It has three levels, with GT-3 being the highest. It measures torsional and bending stress — exactly what large tiles and facades experience.

What does C2 TE S2 mean?
Improved adhesion cement adhesive (C2), reduced slip (T), and long open time (E). S2 is the most flexible class — highly deformable, suitable for moving substrates.

Suitable for facades?
Yes, H40 Tech is specifically designed for this. On facades, apply to both the substrate and the back of the tile (double application). For tile edges longer than 30 cm, the designer may require mechanical fixing.

Suitable for very large tiles?
Yes, even for tiles up to 160x320 cm. The liquid mixture fully wets the back of the tile. For tiles larger than 60 cm, adhesive must also be applied to the back.

Is it suitable for underfloor heating?
Yes. The flexible bond withstands thermal expansion from turning floor heating on and off. Shear stress will not cause cracking.

When can I walk on it and grout?
At +23 °C, it is walkable and ready for grouting after about 24 hours. At +5 °C, this extends to about 50 hours. Pools can be filled after 14 days.

How much do I need?
Approximately 1.25 kg per square meter per millimeter. A 5 mm bed requires about 6.25 kg/m². The exact amount depends on the substrate and the size of the notched trowel.

When should I not choose this?
On a smooth, stable substrate, H40 Gel is also a flexible, well-proven choice — Tech adds extra performance for facades, moving substrates, and back-buttered tiles with GT-3. If you need a walkable surface within a few hours or are installing water-sensitive natural stone, H40 Advanced is better with its accelerated adhesion. For a two-component, extreme hybrid bond, choose H40 Extreme.

Can I apply it myself?
Application with a trowel is simple but requires expertise — especially for large tiles and facades. We also offer installation services; contact us for this.

H40 System

H40 is Kerakoll’s structural gel adhesive line — every product tested with the GT method, suitable for porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone. All are suitable for indoor and outdoor use, underfloor heating, terraces, and swimming pools.

H40 tile adhesive line — which one do you need?

Application Product Classification
General tiling, large tile, underfloor heating H40 Gel GT-2, C2 TE S1
Fast setting, cold weather, water-sensitive natural stone H40 Advanced GT-2, C2F TE S1
Facade, moving substrate (wood, metal), large tile reinforced with fabric H40 Tech GT-3, C2 TE S2
Chemical and thermal resistance, metal substrate, highest strength H40 Extreme GT-3, R2 T

See the entire H40 range in the tile adhesives category. The system is completed with decorative grouts from Color Fill.

Primers: on gypsum, anhydrite, wood, metal, or PVC substrates, a primer is required before bonding — Active Prime Fix or Active Prime Grip (EP21 for H40 Extreme). Highly absorbent cement substrates can be pre-wetted or primed.

Waterproofing: in wet areas, H40 provides a monolithic, waterproof system with the Kerakoll waterproofing product line.

Areas of application

Substrate Preparation
All substrates must be flat, mature, undamaged, solid, rigid, dry, and free from separating agents. They must not be damp from below. Strongly absorbent cement substrates should be moistened or primed with a layer of Active Prime Fix or Active Prime Grip primer.

Mixing
Mixing water for grey product: approx. 22.5–25.5% by weight. Liquid mix for floors: approx. 5.1 l / 20 kg bag. Thixotropic mix for walls: approx. 4.5 l / 20 kg bag. The amount of water is indicative and can be adjusted for application.

Application
Apply enough adhesive to cover the entire back of the tile. For tiles larger than 60 cm and thin tiles, apply adhesive on the back of the tile as well (double application). Always double apply on facades. Use a notched trowel suitable for the tile format. Check adhesion with a sample tile. Follow the requirements for expansion and perimeter joints.

Conditions
Application temperature: +5 °C – +35 °C. Protect fresh adhesive from heavy rain for at least 24 hours. Temperature, ventilation, and substrate absorbency affect workability and curing time.

Cleaning
Clean tools and fresh adhesive residues with water. Once cured, adhesive can only be removed mechanically.
