What is it suitable for?
Substrates: Interior gypsum and gypsum plaster, drywall, surfaces painted with synthetic paint, porous surfaces with different absorption, partially renovated elements. Porous surfaces outdoors. Where lime decoration needs a universal bonding bridge.
Spaces: Interior walls; exterior porous facades; historic buildings. Restoration, renovation.
Function in the system: The universal primer of the Biocalce lime decoration system. It provides adhesion for lime paint and fine plasters on plaster or synthetic paint without changing the appearance.
Not suitable for:
- As a standalone, finished surface (without lime paint or noble plaster) — this is a primer, not a decorative layer
- Before lime-based smoothing compounds or cement outdoors
- On contaminated or crumbling surfaces
- For walls exposed to capillary moisture — first a moisture-proof plaster (Biocalce Zoccolatura / Benesserebio) is required

Why doesn't lime paint stick to old paint or plaster?
Because old paint and plain plaster do not provide an adhesive surface for lime. A universal lime primer forms an adhesive bridge, so the lime decoration sticks. It does not change the appearance of the surface.
Which primer is needed under lime paint on plaster?
Universal or filling lime primer. Fondo Universale is for smooth substrates as a thin bonding primer. For uneven, microcracked substrates, use the filling Biocalce Fondo.
What is the difference between Fondo Universale and Fondo?
Fondo Universale is a universal, thin bonding primer that does not change the appearance of the surface. Biocalce Fondo is a filler: it fills microcracks, is fine-grained, and bacteriostatic. Use Universale on smooth surfaces, Fondo on uneven ones.
What does V1 mean on the primer?
V1 means high vapor permeability (Sd ≤ 0.14 m). This indicates that the layer allows the wall to breathe freely. The wall releases moisture and does not get sealed.
Is a topcoat needed over the lime primer?
Yes. Fondo Universale is a primer, not a finished surface. Over it goes the Biocalce Tinteggio lime paint or a lime fine plaster.
How much primer is needed, how many m² does it cover?
Approximately 0.15–0.25 l/m² per coat. The 4-liter covers about 15–25 m², the 14-liter about 55–90 m². The exact amount depends on the substrate.
Is lime or silicate primer needed?
The decorative surface is decisive. For lime painting or lime fine plaster (Biocalce Tinteggio, Biocalce Marmorino), a lime primer is required — this product belongs to that system. For silicate painting (Biocalce Silicato Puro Pittura), a silicate primer is needed: Biocalce Silicato Consolidante + Biocalce Silicato Fondo.
When should I not use it?
Do not apply on contaminated, crumbling surfaces or walls with rising damp without pretreatment. Outdoors, do not apply before lime finishing plaster or cement — different preparation is needed there.
Can it be purchased separately?
Yes. You can also purchase it if you already have the other system products, if you are preparing an existing surface, or if you have a small leftover from a project.
Can I apply it myself?
Yes — with a brush or lambswool roller, in 1–2 coats. Proper application of lime decoration requires practice. We also carry out the complete lime system.
