What is it suitable for?
Substrates: Absorbent mineral surfaces - new, matured hydraulic lime render; hydraulic cement-lime mortar; old render that adheres well to the masonry and has no synthetic coating. Historic building restoration.
Function in the system: The first coat beneath silicate paint and decorative render; thinner for Silicato Puro Pittura.
Areas: Exterior and interior - façades, interior walls, historic buildings.
Not suitable:
- As a standalone surface (without silicate paint or decorative finish)
- On synthetic paint (e.g. dispersion or acrylic paint) or plastic coating - even if it adheres well
- For walls exposed to rising damp without a damp-proofing plaster (e.g. Biocalce Zoccolatura, Benesserebio)
- For contaminated or loose, friable areas - these must be removed first
- For damp substrates
The Biocalce silicate system
Consolidante is always required under silicate paint and decorative finish. An intermediate primer is applied only on a mixed or uneven substrate - not instead of it, but afterwards.

How can dusty, powdery plaster be consolidated before silicate painting?
Remove loose areas, then consolidate the remaining absorbent surface with a potassium silicate primer. The primer penetrates the substrate and evens out its absorbency. Painting can begin after it has fully cured, but no sooner than 12 hours.
Is primer needed under silicate paint?
Yes, always: this potassium silicate primer is applied beneath Silicato Puro Pittura. On mixed-material surfaces, apply Silicato Fondo Fino afterward; on uneven surfaces, use Silicato Fondo.
How long before it can be painted?
After it has fully cured, but no sooner than 12 hours. Complete silicatization (silicate chemical bonding) takes ≈ 72 hours (+23 °C, humidity below 80%). Protect it from heavy rain for this entire period; in colder, more humid weather, this may take longer.
Do I need a lime or silicate primer?
Silicate primer is required for silicate painting and decorative plaster. For lime paint and lime decorative plaster (Tinteggio, Marmorino), use a lime primer: Fondo or Fondo Universale.
What else is Silicato Consolidante good for?
For thinning Silicato Puro Pittura paint and Silicato Fondo primers. It also consolidates old plaster that adheres well to the masonry; detached or hollow-sounding areas must first be removed.
How much primer is needed per m²?
≈ 0.2 l/m² per coat. One coat of the 5-liter container covers ≈ 25 m², and the 10-liter container covers ≈ 50 m². The exact quantity depends on the substrate's porosity.
When should I not use it?
Not on synthetic paint (e.g. dispersion or acrylic paint) or plastic coatings, even if they adhere well. Walls affected by rising damp must first be treated with a damp-proofing plaster. Do not apply in strong winds, direct sunlight, rain, or when there is a risk of frost within 24 hours; afterward, protect it from heavy rain for 72 hours.
What needs to be protected during application?
Surrounding glass, ceramic, stone, terracotta, and metal surfaces, as well as paths and paving. Pure potassium silicate is highly alkaline and may damage them. Any splashed material must be washed off immediately with clean water.
Can it be purchased separately?
Yes. Even if you already have the silicate paint, if you are treating only part of a façade, or if you need it as a thinner for Silicato Puro Pittura.
Can I apply it myself?
Not recommended without experience: this is a highly alkaline product intended for professional use. Apply it with a brush using crossed, irregular strokes; surrounding glass, stone, and metal must be covered. We also carry out façade work and the complete silicate system.
