Is the old plaster dusty and crumbling? Silicate paint won’t adhere and flakes off. This liquid silicate penetrates deeply and binds the loose surface. It also evens out absorption. This is the first strengthening primer of the Biocalce silicate system.

  • Dusty, crumbling mineral substrate: consolidates deeply — pure potassium silicate chemically binds loose grains (silicification), leaving a strong surface
  • Part of the system: the first step of the Biocalce silicate system — Biocalce Silicato Fondo, Biocalce Silicato Fondo Fino and under silicate paint
  • Weak plaster on masonry: strengthens adhesion — as a silicification enhancer, it bonds to lime and mineral substrates, holding the plaster in place
  • Risk of blotchy, uneven painting: evens out absorption — the color of the silicate paint will be uniform, no blotches show through
  • Very fluid: penetrates deeply — easy to apply with a brush, can be diluted with up to 50% water depending on substrate porosity
  • Also for thinning silicate paint: the official thinner for Biocalce Silicato Puro Pittura — no separate thinner needed
  • Primer, not finishing: the color and decorative surface are provided by the Biocalce Silicato Puro Pittura or Biocalce Silicato Puro silicate layer
Type Silicate primer / wall consolidator (exterior and interior)
Binder Pure potassium silicate (DIN 18363)
Performance Silicification enhancer
Naturally breathable
Material requirement ≈ 0.2 l/m² per coat
5 l ≈ 25 m², 10 l ≈ 50 m²
Packaging 5 l and 10 l cans
Storage ≈ 6 months

What is it suitable for?

Substrates: Absorbent mineral surfaces — hydraulic lime and cement plasters, well-adhering old plasters, historically suitable decorative plasters, clay and other mineral substrates. For consolidating dusty, weak, crumbling surfaces.

Spaces: Exterior and interior — facades and interior walls, renovation, restoration where the substrate needs to be stabilized before silicate painting.

Function in the system: The first, strengthening step of the Biocalce silicate system. It binds the loose surface and evens out absorption before the decorative layers.

Not suitable for:

  • As a standalone, finished surface (without silicate paint) — this is a primer, not a decorative layer
  • On synthetic paints and plastic coatings
  • For walls exposed to capillary moisture — first a moisture-proofing plaster (Biocalce Zoccolatura / Benesserebio) is required

The Biocalce silicate system

Biocalce Silicato Consolidante is the consolidating primer of the silicate system. The possible breathable build-up:

Layer Product Role
Base plaster Biocalce Intonaco; for salt walls Biocalce Zoccolatura / Benesserebio breathable plaster layer
Fine plaster Biocalce Intonachino Fino smooth, paintable surface
Consolidating primer (on weak, dusty substrate) Biocalce Silicato Consolidante — this product substrate consolidation, silicification
Filling / leveling primer (if needed) Biocalce Silicato Fondo or Biocalce Silicato Fondo Fino even absorption, crack bridging
Silicate surface Biocalce Silicato Puro Pittura / Biocalce Silicato Puro breathable, mineral colored surface

Not every primer is always necessary — the condition of the substrate decides. Consolidante stabilizes dusty, weak, crumbling substrates; it can be omitted on sound, solid substrates. Before silicate painting, the uneven, cracked surface is filled and bridged by Biocalce Silicato Fondo, and the fine Biocalce Silicato Fondo Fino evens out the absorption of smooth surfaces. On weak and uneven walls, both are applied one after the other: first Consolidante, then Silicato Fondo. The exact layering is specified by the substrate and the Kerakoll system description.

Which silicate primer is needed?

  • Stabilizing dusty, weak, crumbling substrate: Biocalce Silicato Consolidante — this product deeply consolidates
  • Uneven substrate + crack bridging: Biocalce Silicato Fondo — filling, W3 water resistance
  • Fine, even absorption without damaging the surface: Biocalce Silicato Fondo Fino — thin, leveling

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How to stabilize dusty, crumbling plaster before painting?
With silicate deep primer. The liquid potassium silicate is absorbed and chemically binds the loose particles. The substrate becomes a strong, paintable surface.

Why doesn’t the silicate paint adhere to the old wall?
Because the substrate is dusty or weak. The consolidating primer binds the loose surface and increases adhesion. Without it, the paint may peel off.

Which silicate primer do I need for my substrate?
Dusty, crumbly substrates are fixed by the consolidating Consolidante — this is the first step. For uneven, cracked surfaces, the filling Biocalce Silicato Fondo. For smooth, sound substrates, the fine Biocalce Silicato Fondo Fino.

Is a topcoat needed over the wall consolidating primer?
Yes. Silicato Consolidante is a primer, not a finished surface. Before silicate painting, an intermediate primer (Biocalce Silicato Fondo or Biocalce Silicato Fondo Fino) evens out absorption, then the Biocalce Silicato Puro Pittura silicate paint can be applied.

What else is Silicato Consolidante good for?
The Biocalce Silicato Puro Pittura silicate paint’s official thinner as well. So one product both consolidates and thins in the silicate system.

How much primer do I need, how many m² does it cover?
Approximately 0.2 l/m² per layer. The 5-liter covers about 25 m², the 10-liter about 50 m². The exact amount depends on the porosity of the substrate.

Do I need lime or silicate primer?
The decorative surface decides. For silicate painting (Biocalce Silicato Puro Pittura), a silicate primer is needed — this product belongs to that system. For lime painting or lime noble plaster (Biocalce Tinteggio, Biocalce Marmorino), a lime primer: Biocalce Fondo or Biocalce Fondo Universale.

When should I not use it?
Do not apply it on synthetic paint, plastic coatings, or gypsum substrates. Also not on walls with rising damp — those require a moisture-proof plaster first.

Can it be purchased separately?
Yes. You can purchase it even if you already have the other system products, if you are strengthening an existing substrate, or if you have a small amount left from a project.

Can I apply it myself?
Yes — with a brush, using crossed, irregular strokes to prevent dripping. We also install the complete silicate system.

- Colored, natural and breathable smoothing mortars

User manual

Substrate preparation: The substrate should be compact and dust-free; remove loose, crumbling parts. New plaster must be fully cured and dry.

Application: With a brush, apply one or more layers with crossed, irregular strokes to prevent dripping. Depending on the substrate's porosity, it can be diluted with clean water up to 50%.

Waiting time: The next layer (filler primer or silicate surface) can be applied no earlier than 12 hours later. Full curing ≈ 3 days.

Temperature: +8 °C – +30 °C, relative humidity ≤ 80%. Do not work in frost, direct sunlight, or rain.

WHAT IS BIOCALCE?

Natural lime plasters and wall drying system

Natural hydraulic lime (NHL 3.5, EN 459-1) fired from pure, marly limestone at ~800–1000 °C without clay or cement. Breathable plasters compatible with old masonry, from primer to decorative plaster.

WHY LIME, NOT CEMENT?

The advantage of breathable NHL 3.5

The wall can dry because lime allows water vapor to pass through — much more openly than cement (μ ≈ 6 compared to cement’s ≈ 20), so moisture does not get trapped inside. It is salt-resistant, flexible, and does not damage the old wall when removed — making it the right material for old and historic walls. On its dry, alkaline surface, mold also finds it harder to settle.

WALL DRYING, WHERE NEEDED

For damp, saltpetre-affected walls

The WTA-certified, high porosity (≥ 40%) restoration plaster binds crystallizing salt in its pores and allows moisture to escape. It keeps the surface dry on damp, saltpetre-affected walls and plinths — permanently.
