Want to skim coat an old wall, but the plaster is sandy and dusty? The skim coat adheres to the loose layer, not to the wall. The very thin primer penetrates deeply into the porous plaster. It binds the crumbling surface and regulates water absorption. The skim coat then adheres better and is easier to apply. This is Kerakoll Rasobuild Eco Consolidante.

  • Old, sandy, crumbling plaster: binds the soft, disintegrating surface — the wall stops shedding and the next layer adheres better
  • Part of the system: beneath the Rasobuild Eco Fino, Rasobuild Eco Extrafino, Rasobuild Eco Granello and Rasobuild Eco Top Fino skim coats; on friable substrates, also beneath Biogesso skim coats, and on gypsum plaster, beneath Biocalce Intonachino Fino
  • Extremely porous, granular substrate: very thin (≈ 12 mPa·s), penetrates deeply — reduces and regulates water absorption
  • Skim coat that is difficult to apply to an absorbent wall: improves the workability of skim coats — for more even skim coating
  • Gypsum-based wall surface (gypsum plaster, plasterboard): forms a cohesive separating layer — neutralizes the expansion reaction when mineral mortar or adhesive is applied over it
  • Very porous, highly absorbent wall: apply in several passes, wet-on-wet, until saturated — there is no need to wait for it to dry between coats
  • Interior and exterior: on façades and interior walls — ready to use, no dilution required
  • Renovating an occupied apartment: EC 1 plus and A+ — water-based, with very low VOC emissions
  • Not a finished surface on its own: a skim coat or plaster is applied over it, for example Rasobuild Eco Fino — for absorbent cement screed beneath tile, use Keradur Eco; for gypsum and anhydrite screed, use Active Prime Fix

Frequently asked questions

What should be done if the old plaster is dusty or sandy before skimming?
Remove loose material and dust, and consolidate crumbling surfaces with a deep-penetrating primer. The wall can be skimmed after at least 4 hours. On very porous walls, several coats can be applied wet-on-wet, before the previous coat has dried.

Which primer is needed beneath skim coat on an old wall?
On weak, crumbling or highly absorbent walls, use a plaster-strengthening primer. Rasobuild Eco Consolidante is designed for use beneath Rasobuild Eco Fino and the other Rasobuild Eco skim coats. On sound, solid walls, follow the skim coat manufacturer's instructions.

Can it also be used on plasterboard before skimming?
Yes: the plaster-strengthening primer is also suitable for priming and evening out plasterboard. On gypsum-based surfaces, it forms a separating layer between the mineral mortar and adhesive. The board must be dry and clean.

How long before the wall can be skimmed?
After at least 4 hours (+23 °C, 50% humidity). It takes longer in cold or humid conditions. If the primed layer gets wet or damaged, it must be recoated.

Does it need to be diluted?
No, it is ready to use. Shake before opening. On very porous walls, instead of diluting it, apply several coats wet-on-wet until saturated.

Rasobuild Eco Consolidante or Universal Wall Primer?
Rasobuild Eco Consolidante prepares surfaces beneath skim coats and plasters. Universal Wall Primer is for paint and decorative coatings. Use the former before skimming and the latter before painting.

How much primer is needed per m²?
≈ 0.2–0.4 kg/m² per coat, depending on the substrate's porosity. One 5 kg tub is sufficient for approximately 12.5–25 m² in one coat. Very porous walls may require several coats.

When should I not use it?
On floors, for priming screeds beneath tiles or parquet. It is not suitable as waterproofing either. It may only be applied to painted or varnished walls after completely removing the coating, and not at all to damp walls.

Can it be purchased separately?
Yes. Even if the skim coat is already in place, if you are repairing just one wall, or if the porous wall has required more material.

Can I apply it myself?
The product is designed for professionals, but application is simple: apply an even coat with a short-pile roller or brush, then apply another coat crosswise. It can also be applied with a low-pressure hand sprayer. We also carry out the skimming and painting.

User guide

Substrate preparation: Even a weak, porous substrate must be sound and absorbent. Remove dust, oil, grease and unstable parts; remove varnish and paint completely. The substrate must be stable and must not deform, and there must be no flaking cracks. Residual moisture in gypsum plaster ≤ 1% (carbide measurement).

Preparation: Ready to use. Shake the can before opening.

Application: Apply an even coat using a short-pile synthetic roller or brush, then repeat crosswise. On very porous substrates, apply in several passes, wet-on-wet, until saturated. It can also be applied using a low-pressure hand sprayer.

Waiting time: The smoothing compound or plaster may be applied ≥ 4 hours after the final primer coat (+23 °C, 50% humidity; longer in colder conditions). If the coat becomes soaked or detaches for mechanical reasons, re-prime it.

Conditions: Between +5 °C and +35 °C; on a clean, dry, absorbent substrate.
